Rodney Brooks leads the writing team at SRB Communications, developing messaging and content for traditional media, social and digital platforms, corporate annual reports, focus group findings, brochures, fact sheets, FAQs, and more, e.g., for energy and utilities, higher education, public health, government, non-profit and political clients. He brings more than four decades of writing, editing and journalism experience to the agency.

Brooks also writes about retirement and issues related to economic and health disparities. His retirement columns appear on U.S. News & World Report and AARP’s Senior Planet.com. He has written extensively about the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the Black community for National Geographic and financial literacy for The Undefeated. Brooks has also written columns for The Washington Post and USA TODAY.

He is author of the book, Fixing the Racial Wealth Gap: Building Generational Wealth for Black People. He is co-author of Retirement Planning Essentials: A Guide to Living Well Without Running out of Money. He is also author of Is One Million Dollars Enough: A Guide to Planning for and Living Through a Successful Retirement. He is a successful ghost writer, writing a half-dozen other books, mostly for financial planners.

Recently, Brooks testified before the U.S. Senate Committee on Aging and the challenges facing Americans when they retire, especially in underserved communities.

Previously, Brooks was Deputy Managing Editor and retirement columnist for USA TODAY where coordinated all personal finance on all platforms. He retired in 2015 after 30 years with the nation’s national newspaper. He was also assistant business editor and reporter at the Philadelphia Inquirer. He also worked as a reporter and editor for the Asheville (N.C.) Citizen-Times and the Ithaca (N.Y.) Journal.

Brooks received a National Press Foundation fellowship on pensions and retirement. In 2021, he was a finalist in 2018 for the Washington D.C. Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists Awards and the NABJ Salute to Excellence Award. In October 2021, Brooks will be inducted into the National Association of Black Journalists’ Hall of Fame. He has also received the organization’s prestigious President's Award in 2007. He served two terms as NABJ treasurer.

Brooks currently serves on the Foolproof Foundation’s Walter Cronkite Committee, an organization dedicated to teaching financial literacy in public schools. Over the years, he continues to be a mentor to a countless number of writers who work for national and local newspapers across the country.

A native of Linden, N.J., he received a Bachelor of Science in Communication Arts from Cornell University and an executive certificate in financial planning from Georgetown University.
